And the Verdict is… Meh.

I’m not talking about the choice of title for my new book. I know what it is and I like it. No, I’m talking about Judgment Day, The End of the World, The Rapture.

Just because it’s come and gone, don’t think for a minute that Judgment Day didn’t happen. We were informed by a reliable source (Camping) that the selected time and date was 6:00 p.m. PDT on May 21, 2011. So what happened?

Well, as far as I can tell, God passed judgment and it was “Meh!” In the expanded version, it translated to “Who cares?” Specifically, who cares about your petty religions that always have to be the one, only, and right way to God? Who cares about your national boundaries and racial politics? Who cares about your sexual orientation or right to choose? Who cares about your wars, famines, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and tornadoes?

In a nutshell, People of Earth: If you don’t care, why should God?"

I’m not a religious person, born again, devout, jihadist, or ascetic. But it’s time we faced the simple fact that the Rapture, Paradise, and Hell are our own devices to create or destroy. No super-being is going to swoop down to pass judgment. Our children are. No alien force is going to show up and solve the problems of the world. We are. No creed is going to prove infallible, no path the only path, and no martyrdom salvation.

It makes no difference what date or time Camping had chosen for the announcement of the Rapture. The result would be the same. It’s not up to God to save us. It’s up to us.
