Faster, Cheaper, Better

I did an editorial pass on a paper this weekend that talked about how a new technology would make it possible for a business to make more accurate client records, cut the time it took to maintain the filing system, and save the company vast amounts of money. A triple-threat!

I was reminded of a sign that hung over my desk back in the early days of desktop publishing (yeah, I was around back then). The sign said:

Quality work

Fast turnaround

Low prices

Pick two

I’m facing a workload that involves designing and producing five books in the next four weeks. Two of them are eBooks, one is print, and two will be both print and eBook, so technically seven projects. I’m looking at my list of options. I can’t cut the quality of workmanship on my layout and design work because… well it just isn’t in my nature. I’ve already issued the contracts, so the prices are set. And they all have the same release date in July (or earlier).

Well. A triple-threat. If you don’t hear much from me the next couple of weeks, it’s not because my head’s in the sand. I’ve got it buried someplace else!
