A Rose By Any Other Name

Every middle schooler in the Upper Midwest has tittered at one time or another over the name Intercourse, Minnesota. There are just a few names that do that to us. There are significance and double entendres in the names of places that we can’t avoid. That’s just one of the pitfalls of writing. Even if you use a real place, people form an idea about it before they ever read the description.

I took a little heat yesterday when I identified Endor as a place that Frodo went to.

I’m not suggesting that there is significance to the names of every place on the map or in a book. That would certainly be absurd. But I have always wondered about Intercourse, MN.
