Where did the dwarf come from?

I've checked through my notes and my character list, and nowhere did it say a dwarf woodcutter pops out of the woods with his axe and ferries Steven across the lake in his boat. Now Steven has just sat down to dinner with the little guy and his constrastingly tall and willowy wife and they want to tell stories. Where in the notes does it say a dwarf and his elfin wife tell the story of the odd couple or something and then Steven responds with the story of the bottomless lake or some such. I have no idea where I'm going with this as of right now.

On the plus side, with 3,454 words today, I'm now over 20,000! The only problem I'm seeing at the moment is that according to the distance Steven has traveled, he's only a third of the way to the dragon and I expected him to spend a third of the book in the dragon's company. I think the dwarf signals a rethinking of part of the journey.

Well, I think that's it for tonight.
