I read it.. still like it

I stayed up until 2:00 this morning reading the entire manuscript of Four Faces. Well, there are good and bad parts as you would expect. For one thing, the sixth draft I worked on from November 1985 until April 1986 and then for some reason stopped. The last half of the book is the fifth draft, labeled October 1985. That means that there are some real inconsistencies between the first and last half of the book. The story is all there, but I have to really get down to specifying who's a good guy and who's bad and how closely the book is tied to the other three in the set.

I patterened a lot of characters after people I knew in college, some of them by name or characteristic. I came across one character named Glenn that I remember specifically patterning after a fun-loving friend named Glenn Weaver. At one point the characters are bantering about what they want to be when they grow up and he quips, "I'm going to be alive." It was about five years ago that I visited the home town for a class reunion and I found that Glenn had died not long after college of a congenital heart condition that no one knew about. Reading the line left me with a sudden tear of remembrance for an old friend. That particular line stays in.
