Editor introductions at PNWA Conference

Ronald Kovach: The Writer Magazine, senior editor. Non-fiction. Writing help. Craft of writing.
Katie McHugh: SR. Editor at DaCapo Lifelong Books. Interested in non-fiction. Especially diet books. Difference between narrative non-fiction and other non-fiction: narrative has a storyline, like a memoir. If you take cancer, you could have a prescriptive non-fiction, expose on how cigarette industry fought things, Cancer on $5 per day, is a humorous narrative.
Carrie Obry: Llewellyn. Spiritual self-help. spiritual nonfiction, including alternative health, personal growth, sexuality, past life regression, and psychic development.
Heather Osborn (with whom I have an appointment tomorrow morning): acquiring editor at Tor. (I've just renamed "The Four Faces of Carles" to "The Props Master.") SciFi & Fantasy. She is editor of the Tor Romance line (paranormal romance). Also very interested in Urban Fantasy. Always accepts unagented, unsolicited manuscripts. Check the submission guidelines on the Tor site for how to submit.
Heather Proulx: Acquiring for Crown Publishing Group. Focuses on historical fiction and some narrative non-fiction. She is looking for fiction set in the past. Strong voice and strong story. What is going on with Amazon's Kindle? Impact? Crown is looking strongly at this. We have started producing early PDFs. It will be interesting to see where things go from here in the next 5 years. I don't think books are going away, but I think the next generation is changing things. Every book we release at Crown is also an eBook. (She needs to meet Long Tale Press!)
Fleetwod Robbins: editor at Wizards of the Coast. Not just games, but fantasy books. Primarily looking for fantasy. More traditional high fantasy elements. Don't need an intimate knowledge of dragons and dwarves, but I'd be happy if you do. We take some shared world novels based on our games. We contract them out. (Jason already got an ask from him for query and sample chapters of "Tothelea!") Considers Star Wars to be more Fantasy than SciFi. SciFi in his mind is rooted in current understanding of science theory.
Lisa Ann Sandell: Orchard Books and Scholastic. Now acquiring for the flagship imprint at Scholastic. Looking for elementary and middle grade chapter books and some young adult fiction and middle grade graphic novels. Loves mystery, thriller, and stories with talking animals. Does not accept unsolicited or unagented manuscripts. Welcome to send query letters, but it needs a quick catch or we send back a form letter.
Maria Schneider: editor of Writer's Digest. Moving to a strong on-line presence. (We need to get Long Tale Press requirements into Writer's Market annual.) Interested in articles for and about writing. F&W Pubs. Only accepts e-mail queries. She believes that is a real benefit to writers. No postage and envelopes. Everything electronic. Characteristics of a great blog: It's hard. #1 is consistency. Able to do it every day or at least 3-5 times per week. It is a brutal endless schedule. #2 Ability to write concisely. 300-500 words absolute max. #3 Strong voice. (Also traffic and linking to other blogs. Virtual content.)
Paul Taunton: Random House Publishing Group since 2003. Narrative non-fiction, popular science, business. Ballantine Books is his major involvement. Currently starting a joint venture with ESPN books for sports publishing. Difference between literary fiction and commercial fiction: Commercial could be anything that has commercial broad appeal. Often category fiction or genres. There are many examples within genres that would be unfair not to call them literary. Writers excelling at their craft; focused more on the prose and less on conventional plot expectations.
Kathie Fong Yoneda: Independent script consultant. Called a script doctor. Former studio executive at Paramount, Columbia, MGM, Universal, 20th Century Fox, and Disney. To have a worthy hero, you have to have a worthy opponent.
