Memo about Onions

Just in case you ever have the situation arise, it is a good idea to put your contacts in before you chop onions rather than after.

Obligatory chemistry note:

When cut, onions release a gas (some wacky byproduct of enzymes and other sulpher-bearing chemicals that, in the uncut onion, are kept separate), into the air. This gas reacts readily with water. Your eyes are, generally speaking, coated with a little bit of water. When the gas reacts with this water, it produces sulphuric acid! So no wonder you end up crying.

Being a lifelong eyeglass wearer, I can only speculate at the discomfort of trapping that stuff under your contacts...
