More detective shows

So I'm sitting here in front of the computer with a DVD in and watching Peter Gunn mysteries. Now I know that all my friends on LJ are too young to know who the hell Peter Gunn is, but back in the late 50s he was a big deal on television. Create by Blake Edwards and played by Craig Stevens, Peter Gunn was the quintessential tough private eye. And theme music by Henry Mancini won an Emmy all the way back in 1958. Yeah, I was 9 years old, and my Dad would stay up at night and watch Peter Gunn. I wasn't up, of course, but it was a small house and I could hear the music.

All the episodes have common locations. Mother's is the cafe nightclub where Peter hangs out and where Edie Hart (played by Lola Albright, and wow is she hot!) is a singer. Edie is Peter's long-suffering girlfriend. Jazz is a central theme. So far all the episodes I've watched have at least featured one song by Edie, and often several jazz muscians, or, get this, beat joints. Yeah. Like man. Cool. Real beatniks reciting lousy poetry, creating poor art, and getting stoned out of their minds. Every jazz band has somebody playing bongos. But the music is cool and you can really dig it.

Okay, so Gunn is a PI with style, but he's easy to pull a gun or knock someone out in a fist-fight. He's constantly using himself for bait, and often getting into big trouble for it. He has a great relationship with a cop who as often as not pulls him out of the jam he's in. Well, I've only watched four of the sixteen episodes that are on these two DVDs. But then, tomorrow is Father's Day and I get to lie around in bed all morning while my daughter and her best friend make crepes and serve them with hot coffee and the morning paper to me in bed. Hey! One day a year I'm king. Frankly, I think it's a pretty good deal!

I've heard of Peter Gunn. Never seen it, but my parents told me about it. (Plus, we had to play the theme in middle school band.)
Oops, tomorrow is Father's Day.
You ever watch Veronica Mars, her dad is a PI, and she kinda follows his footsteps. her character is awesome and spunky. Could be something for inspiration or some such.

I just started a detective story myself the other day. i was bored and wanted to write, and it just flowed. I have two chapters with at least one more planned, i hope it goes somewhere.

Good luck with yours!
