Test-driving a Mazda5

Well, this weekend, since we had a long road trip, I decided to rent a Mazda5 and see how we liked it. Have to say that even though Enterprise had trouble getting the car back from the previous renter in time for us to leave, they did their best and actually got us the right car. We've put about 250 miles on it with another 200 to get home and so far it seems pretty good. It's responsive and has a good sound system, but is much noisier than say the Kia Sedona that we tested in Minneapolis. It may even be noisier than our V70XC. Also, compared to the XC, it is nowhere near as comfortable. It's not that it isn't big and roomy inside (DD loves the back seats and the number of combinations of upright and flat that she can make) overall it just isn't a comfortable to sit in the driver's seat. Steering wheel position and seat heights make it feel more like a truck, even though it is quite a tidy little bundle.

I think this will be the last of the Van/SUVs that we test. I've got four smaller cars that come in reasonably safe station wagon models to check out in the next couple weeks: Mazda3 or Mazda6 (pricey), Ford Focus, Toyota Matrix, and pssibly a Pontiac Vibe (though it falls more onto the SUV side). I'd like to drive a Volvo V50, but it is a pretty pricey vehicle as well, unless there is a special of some sort on a year-end-closeout. We'll see.
