World Champion Telephone Toss

Yes, Finland hosts the world championship telephone toss each August (compliments of Nokia). Last night all registrants in the conference were encouraged to enter a qualifying competition with top prize being transportation, lodging and entry into the World championships next August. Well, my arm isn't anything close to capable of tossing the 60 meters that it would have taken to qualify (I don't think I made 25 meters on my test throw), so I entered the Freestyle competition instead. In this competition, you are judged on throwing style and choreography (unfortunately no free trips awarded). Yes, I won the competition. Enlisting the aid of a fellow registrant who also happened to be considering juggling phones before the toss, we juggled our way to the line, yelling our best circus "hup!"s, tossing phones back and forth between the two of us and then pitching them over our shoulders into the field. The judges thought that was a superior performance and awarded us first prize, which was a World Championship t-shirt.

This after an exhausting but rewarding day reviewing papers and brainstorming issues of User Assistance in Intelligent Environments, was a great way to cap off the activities. I didn't let that stop me from drinking beer and having dinner with friends afterward, though. Hmmm. It was a short night and the first keynote this morning is about to start.

Later.
