Our Solstice Celebration

was beautiful and intimate. One person called in late in the afternoon with a migraine and didn't make it, which left us with 13 people including the two 13-year-olds.

I made Prime Rib, slow cooked in a crust of rock salt and garlic. I grated my own horseradish root which made a very powerful accompaniment to the beef. Lyn brought scalloped potatoes, Deirdre brought that incredible sweet potato puree, Sarah & Eric brought a chicken pot that was absolutely succulent, Audrey brought a bunch of little bacon wrapped appetizers, and then Sara and Rick both brought incredible desserts, as did Mary with the homemade toffee. There was champagne in abundance, a couple bottles of fine red wine, and coffee. We made the first toast a little before six and folks started leaving about 11:00. It was one of the best gatherings ever.

I told the solstice story (goddess in the underworld), we passed around last year's yule log and burned it to a pile of ash, decorated the tree, and lit candles on this year's yule log. Here are a couple pictures of the yule log this year:

log before decorating
The log was from the top part of the tree that fell behind our house in the storm last Thursday. The top broke off in the wind and hit the neighbor's house. Fortunately no damage was done to the house, but the tree and one next to it were so severely damaged that they had to be taken down.

candles ready to be lit
I found some incredibly beautiful Hannukah candles at Fireworks and used those to decorate the log. Thirteen candles representing the thirteen lunar months of the year.

The log aglow with our wishes for the new year
After we had all made our wishes and goals for the new year known, the log was ablaze with hope.

Hope your solstice was marvelous, and that you have a wonderful remainder of the winter holiday season.
